String Spiderweb for December OMG

I could not decide whether or not to join the December One Monthly Goal challenge. I have so many projects but feel like I won’t have very much sewing time this month. In the end, I decided that even if I don’t meet my goal, any progress is good and OMG is a great motivator.

In 2017 I participated in the #100days100blocks2017 Instagram challenge hosted by Angie at Gnome Angel. The project was the 100 blocks in Tula Pink’s City Sampler book. I am not exaggerating when I say that I pulled enough fabric for that project to make 10 quilts. Also in 2017 I took a Bonnie Hunter’s String Spiderweb class. Since I had lots of little strips left from City Sampler (along with a tub of additional fabric) I decided to use them for my Spiderweb quilt. Just for the record, string piecing is not my favorite technique. I find it slow and tedious and I’ve only seen a handful of finished string quilts that I really like.  Plus the mess that comes with tearing off the paper. No, thank you.

Still, I wanted to participate in the class and after all, Bonnie Hunter is the String Queen, so I thought maybe I would learn to like it. Unfortunately, it’s still not my favorite. Here we are, approaching 2019 and I still have that giant bag of strings and tub of backup fabric in my sewing room. It is past time to move this project forward.

So, my December One Monthly Goal is to finish these string blocks. This is what I have so far.

Unless, I make a three block table runner, I need more blocks.  I think the blocks will finish around 11″ so my goal is to make another 21 blocks. If I add a border that should be a decent size lap quilt. That’s 84 string units, which sounds like a lot, but mindless sewing may just be what I need in December.
