What could be more appropriate than a Sunny Skies Quilt on a hot, sunny July day? I started this quilt a couple of years ago and finally put it together earlier this year. I am an avid fan of Women’s World Cup soccer and have watched many of the matches (ALL of USNWT!) while hand stitching binding. This is a fun, easy quilt to make with a jelly roll. Heads up–National Sew A Jelly Roll Day will be September 21 this year. If you would like to make your own Sunny Skies Quilt, there is a tutorial by Megan Pitz of Canoe Ridge Creations on the Missouri Star Quilt Company website here.
The jelly roll is Olive’s Flower Market by Lella Boutique from Moda. I used Bella Solids in pfd Bleached and Betty’s Pink in the alternate blocks.
My quilting design is the same edge to edge freehand swirls that I use over and over. I really need to expand my freehand designs.
The backing was a sale fabric I picked up at Hobby Lobby. The colors worked perfectly with the Olive’s Flower Market fabrics.
Sunny Skies would also be a great stashbusting quilt. Pull out that bin of leftover 2-1/2″ squares and start piecing 16 patch blocks. Before you know it, you’ll have enough blocks for a quilt. Here’s hoping we have many, many more days of sunny skies this summer!
