Baby Quilt Blitz-Day 2

Today’s quilt is similar to yesterday’s but it has checkerboard sashing on two sides.  I was inspired by this tile floor.

I had to do a little playing around with it in EQ7 to make it work for charm squares and came up with this.

For this quilt you will need one pack of (42) 5” charm squares, plus 3/4 yard EACH of two fabrics for the checkboard sashing and border.  You will also need 3/8 yard for binding.

Cut (7) 2” strips from each of the two checkerboard fabrics.

Sew one each of these strip sets.  Press toward the darker fabric.  Cut (21) 2” segments from each strip set.

Sew two of these strip sets.  Press toward the darker fabric.  Cut (21) 2” segments from each strip set.

To make the block, sew a three-square segment to one side of the charm square.  Press toward the charm square.  Then sew a four-square segment to the bottom.  Press toward the charm square.

Use half of your charm squares and make 21 of these blocks.

Now, use the other half of your charm squares and make 21 blocks with the checkerboard colors reversed, like this:

Follow the diagram below to lay out your blocks.  It’s your quilt, though, so feel free to rotate the blocks anyway you like.  This diagram just shows how I arranged mine.

I added a checkerboard border.  You will need (54) 2” squares of each fabric for the border. 

Here is my finished quilt.

I quilted it with a great pantograph called Mexican Carpet by Urban Elements.  It was probably the fastest and easiest panto I’ve ever done and I just love how it looks on this quilt!
