Patchwork Sampler

Make quilts. Use fabric. Have fun.

Just. Sew. Something

My mojo is missing. 🙁

For some reason I’ve been in a funk lately and can’t get motivated to get in the sewing room.  I just made a long overdue trip to Kansas City to see my mom, sisters and BFF so hadn’t touched my sewing machine in over a week.  Yesterday I went down to find something (anything!) to do and this overstuffed bag of scraps caught my eye.

String-block-3-scraps

Most of these strips are first cuts to straighten fabric and I used to throw them away.  Then string blocks became popular and I thought they might be useful.  In all my years of quilting I’ve never made a string block because it always seemed too much like paper piecing which I detest (too tedious and hate ripping paper!).   It really wasn’t too bad, though, so I’ll probably continue and make enough blocks for a quilt to donate to Heartstrings.

String-block-6

This was mindless which is just what I needed.  Some of the strips were wonky so I placed the middle strip off-center and it’s a little wide, but not bad and I can say I’ve made a string block!  It got me going anyway and I loaded the Dutchman’s Puzzle UFO on the frame so I can finish up the borders.  No fabric used this week but any progress on a quilt is a step in the right direction!

My weekly stats:
Used this week:  0
Used year to date:  270 yards
Purchased this week:  0 yards
Purchased year to date: 98 yards
Net year to date:  172 yards used –

I love your colors. I also want to do a string block at some point. I’m saving my scraps and strings now so that when I feel like it I can put together a block or two. Its a perfect project that doesn’t require too much thinking! 🙂

I love string piecing, it is such a great way to use up scraps of all sizes. You don’t even need to worry about accuracy an d for me each block is a surprise when complete. I love the way yours came out, so pretty.
