Quilting As Therapy

Stack of little quilts

My Friday finish is kind of big this week–well, actually it is six little finishes, but it adds up to big impact!

Quilting as therapy Part 1

Recently, my catsitter, who works in a veterinary clinic, asked if I could make a few little quilts for them to use in the clinic. Of course, that was a request I could not refuse. Around the same time, I was going to Kansas City to visit my mom. I’ve mentioned before that she had a stroke last summer that affected her left side. We are always looking for ways to engage both sides of her body and I figured what better way than to do some piecing.

My mom is not a quilter, but she can sew. At first, she was hesitant, but we kept it simple and she quickly got the hang of it. I found she did better with shorter seams so I had her piece the blocks and I sewed the blocks into tops. A week later I came home with six tops to be quilted.

I am happy to say that these six quilts have now been donated to the clinic. It was a fun project for my mom and me to work on together. She enjoyed it and it made her use both her hands at the same time. A win/win for sure!

Quilting as therapy Part 2

Quilting can also provide mental therapy. My friend, Maude, at The Retro Quilter, started a podcast in January called Thread and Therapy. In each episode, she talks to a quilter about their struggle and how they used quilting as a catalyst for change. Check it out wherever you get your podcasts.

Thank you for the invitation to hear from other quilters. I lost my quilting buddy years ago because of a move. I am happy to know I can hear from many quilting buddies out there. And hear the success and not-so-successful stories. Thank you, thank you.
