This scrappy Brickwork quilt came about from a UFO. In this case, it really was an unidentified object. When I opened the project bag there was only a giant stack of 6-1/2” flannel squares and a cryptic reference to the pattern. I have no idea the original intention for these blocks but Plan B quickly developed. This weekend I sewed the top together. Next week will be my Quilt-a-thon and now this one is in the quilting queue.
About the same time I found the squares, Sarah at Confessions of a Fabric Addict announced this year’s Hands2Help Charity Quilt Challenge. I knew right away this would become my contribution. My first thought was to simply sew the squares together, but decided to take the idea a baby step further and cut the squares in half to make bricks.
It is taking quite a bit of time to sew everything together but I’m doing it while watching NCAA basketball games. Once I had the bricks arranged in a “pleasing manner” the actual construction has been pretty mindless.
Brickwork is such an easy quilt that anyone could make it without a pattern. It is simply a matter of sewing the bricks into rows and then sewing the rows together. This is a great quilt for using up scraps. The more fabrics you use, the easier it is to arrange them so like fabrics aren’t touching. It doesn’t require any background yardage and you can mix up lights, mediums and darks. It is perfect for getting rid of some fabrics you no longer love.
