My best pressing tip is to stack press for flat se

My best pressing tip is to stack press for flat seams. First press the closed seam to set it, then open it and press. Offset the next piece a little bit, press the closed seam, then open it and press. Continue stacking and pressing. I usually stack eight at a time. If you're pressing HSTs like this example, you can pick up the whole stack and quickly trim the dog ears.

After owning several pricey irons and being disappointed in either the steam or durability, I now use a cheap Black and Decker Evensteam. It has a great steam function and has never clogged or leaked even though it always has water in it. I iron on a big board that is covered with a wool mat. I then use a white bath towel over the wool mat. The towel provides a little friction so the pieces don't slip and it's much easier to wash than the wool mat. I also use a clapper after piecing blocks. It seems to help keep everything nice and flat.

Most of the quilts I make are scrappy in the sense

Most of the quilts I make are scrappy in the sense that I use many different fabrics. The two photographs are true scrap quilts. All the fabric in them were leftovers from other projects. Both of these quilts were free block series I offered last year in my newsletter.

Scrap quilts are my favorites so I can't wait to see what everyone shares today!

I could write a book on the lessons I've learned from making quilts. From a technical standpoint though, no one quilt was a breakthrough in making me a good quilter. Instead, it's been a years-long progression of learning and experimenting.

Two quilts in particular have been important lessons. First, is to photograph quilts after piecing the top so you can more easily see if pieces are out of place, reversed, or turned in the wrong direction. In the first picture I didn't notice this row of flying geese were switched until hand stitching the binding. Typically, I can spot these issues right away in a photograph.

Second, if you're using a solid "white" background, write down the specific one you're using. I didn't see that I used two different background fabrics until I photographed this quilt in sunlight.

I couldn't pick just one machine for today's #igquiltfest prompt. I love this Eversewn Sparrow because, well, it's aqua. Haha! I have it set up in the sunniest room in our house and with seasonal affective disorder I work here a lot in the winter.

The Bernina 1230 is one of my most treasured possessions. This is the machine that made me fall in love with quilting. Even though it is over 30 years old it still sews like a champ.

The workhorse, though, is my Juki. I can't even imagine how many miles of thread I have run through this machine. It's fast, dependable, and sews only a straight stitch; but it does that to perfection.

Thanks again to @amyscreativeside for providing the prompts. I look forward to seeing everyone's sewing machines.

My first quilt was a rail fence. I will be forever

My first quilt was a rail fence. I will be forever grateful to Jackie Robinson @animasquilts for teaching the beginning quilting class that ignited my lifelong passion. She was such a great teacher and inspiration.

In the first session of that class I pieced these four tops (two of the baby rainbow rails). I recently found the second rainbow rail top, still not quilted. Soon I will quilt, bind, and donate it.

I still think about rail fence blocks and all the possibilities they offer. I can definitely see another one in my future!

Hello quilting friends. I'm Rhonda and am so excited to participate in this year's #IGQuiltFest hosted by @amyscreativeside. As an introduction, here are a few facts about me.

🧵I love scrappy quilts and don't think you can ever have too many different fabrics in a quilt.

🧵Mindless piecing puts me in a Zen state. Chain-piecing a thousand HSTs is like therapy.

🧵I recently discovered that I love tech editing quilt patterns. Reading hundreds and hundreds of patterns over the years, plus my attention to detail as an accountant make this a perfect fit.

🧵I met my husband over the phone and we've been married 41 years.

🧵When I'm not sewing, I like to travel. We just returned from an amazing trip to India.

I can't wait to be inspired by other quilters!
